Volunteer role – Walk Leader, Pilkington Ramblers Club (St Helens)

Pilkington Ramblers was founded in 1988 for Pilkington retirees and friends to regularly keep active and to socialise. They hold a monthly coffee morning at the Wicket on Ruskin Drive and undertake a walk each month. Currently the group has 60 members.

Key responsibilities of a Volunteer Walk Leader:

  • Identify potential walk routes, usually a short walk (4 miles) and a longer walk (up to 7 miles) so that members can choose a route that is suitable for them
  • Recce a route to check that the route is accessible and meets the needs of the group. This will include assessing distance, number and condition of stiles, height change, toilets and a lunch stop
  • Provide details of the walk at a monthly members coffee morning, these are held at 10am on the 1st Wednesday of every month
  • Plan alternative routes in case the walk needs to be adapted due to poor weather conditions or an injury
Lead the walk on the date agreed, this will be a weekday.

Location of Walks

Coach Trips, April – October
The group organise a coach to visit areas a maximum of 1.5 hours away.
Walk leaders need to be available from 9.15am until 6.30pm on the day of the walk.

Local walks

These take place locally with no transport provided.

All out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed including travel and food.

“The Trust has given me the opportunity to develop my skills and knowledge. The organisation has supported me to complete two professional qualifications, which has allowed me to both personally and professionally grow. These additional skills and knowledge now provide me with the tools to deliver a better-quality service to beneficiaries I support.”

“I’ve worked as a Team Leader at Ruskin Lodge for 10 years now.
As the years have gone by my role has changed somewhat and definitely progressed.

I have been given the opportunity to progress within my career through further education, in-house training, support and guidance from my Manager.

My role is certainly challenging at times and it is an extremely rewarding job for too many reasons to mention.

It’s safe to say we are family!”
